The tradition of sending Valentine cards really began in the 1850’s, when Esther Howland, a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, and native of Worcester, MA began mass producing them. She was known as “The Mother of the Valentine”. Her original cards were made with ribbons, pictures and real lace.
